History:
Ashmore Estates has been known as a haunted building. Built in 1916, it has three massive floors and an attic with a stairwell on each end of the building. From 1916 to 1956 the building was the Coles County
Almshouse located on 200 to 300 acres, known as “Coles County Poor Farm“. During that time, some 100 people died in the building. From 1956 to 1976 it housed the “mentally impaired” as a mental institution.
In 1976, Paul Swinford purchased the building and used it as a Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled. The building was closed in 1987 due to lack of funding.
Investigation:
We spent six hours there investigating with a group of ten people. It was a four hour drive for us to get there and of course a four hour drive back. The building is nestled in the middle of a corn field, row upon rows of corn. Once there we broke down into teams, three teams with three people per team. That left one person to watch the computer cameras that we had set up on each floor. We started with one team per floor and rotated so each team could experience each floor. At one point some investigators went into the attic, only to find a hole in the roof where birds and bats were entering and exiting.
On the second floor we experienced something! There was this awful smell, it seemed to be coming from this old wall locker. Lorin approached the locker to open the door. When he opened the door something dark almost black came running out and ran between his legs. Then it bumped into Dianna who was standing right behind him. The black object ran into the maze and we decided to follow it, in hopes of getting a better look at the black object. We never caught up to it. However, the camera man said there was something black came out of the Maze before us. When we explained the occurrence to the Owner , he said it was most likely “Joe.” Joe lived and died in the building when it was known as the Poor Farm. Joe has been seen by many people in a full body appreciation; As a black Shadow.
Lorin sat down in a chair in what is known as the “GREEN ROOM” or “ACTORS ROOM” He felt the presence of a little girl looking for her Mommy. The owner said there was a little girl about six that burned to death in the building.
Two members of our Team felt a spirit in the closet behind the nurse’s station. They had the strong feeling of death! Like maybe someone was hung there, not murdered but took their own life.
Conclusion:
The team Feels that there is definitely shadow people present in this place.
The house has been know to have a appreciation of a little boy in the upstairs window. People say they drive by the house and can see a little boy standing in the window looking out.
And the owner says he has seen a dark shadow of a man wearing a 50’s style suite with a top hat on many occasions. They call this shadow Joe and his picture is drawn on several walls in the house.
