It is usually understood as being of an emotional nature and, as such, it is equated to the desire body or emotional body. However, some philosophies conceive that the astral body is a body made of ether (the soul body), built by each individual during the current evolutionary stage (the Philosophers' Stone), which is said to give support to the desire (emotional) body during the astral projection
Astral Plane –
Also called the astral world or desire world, is a plane of existence according to esoteric philosophies, some religious teachings and New Age thought. ccording to Occult, Theosophical, and New Age teachings, the astral plane can be visited consciously with the astral body through means of meditation and mantra, lucid dreaming, or other forms of training and development. The common human being normally separates his or her consciousness and astral vehicle from the physical body every night as he or she sleeps. Clairvoyants can see the astral vehicle floating a few inches over the sleeping physical body. This separation of the astral vehicle from the physical body every night is necessary for the human being to receive and process energies coming from higher, spiritual or more subtle planes of existence allowing the individual to awake the following day with his or her energies renewed. Human individuals that are spiritually advanced or trained in the use of their astral vehicle, can separate their consciousness and astral vehicle from the physical body at will and remain fully aware of the circumstances, using this capability at night to perform altruistic services or receive esoteric knowledge and training while in the astral plane. The astral vehicle remains connected to the physical body during the separation through a so called “silver cord”, mentioned in Ecclesiastes 12:6. All physical things have astral and other more subtle or spiritual counterparts that interpenetrate them. A world that is believed to exist above our physical world
Astral Projection (astral travel) -
Paranormal interpretation of an out-of-body experience achieved either awake or via lucid dreaming or deep meditation. The concept of astral projection assumes the existence of another body, separate from the physical body and capable of traveling to non-physical planes of existence. Commonly such planes are called astral, etheric, or spiritual. Astral projection is often experienced as the spirit or astral body leaving the physical body to travel in the spirit world or astral plane. This is also referred to as an O.B.E.

Automatic Writing -
Phenomena by which people write without conscious thought. The process, or product, of writing material that does not come from the conscious thoughts of the writer. People who believe in "automatic writing" say that the writer's hand forms the message, with the person being unaware of what will be written. In some cases, it is done by people in a trance state. Other times the writer is aware (not in a trance) of their surroundings but not of the actions of their writing hand. Automatic writing is used in Spiritualism, Spiritism and the New Age movement as a form of channeling

Battlefield Ghosts -
These are places with great violence, trauma and intense emotion are typically subject to hauntings. There are no places more violent than battlefields, and it is rare to hear of a battlefield that isn't haunted. Most battlefield hauntings are residual hauntings where fragments of the battle are replayed over and over again. Other hauntings are from spirits who have not crossed over, most likely because they feel they can't due to the nature of their death. Some believe retrocognition is also an element in battlefield hauntings
Bean Shìth -
Sìth in Scottish Gaelic (síd in Old Irish, síocháin in Modern Irish) also means "peace", and the fairies are referred to as the duine sìth (Irish, daoine sídhe) - the "people of peace". Most spirit presences are of the benign nature
Bilocation-
Term used to describe the ability/instances in which an individual or object is said to be, or appear to be, located in two distinct places at the same instant in time. Bilocation is said to be a physical, rather than spiritual, phenomenon, and a person experiencing it is supposedly able to interact with their surroundings as normal, including being able to experience sensations and to manipulate physical objects exactly as if they had arrived through natural means. This makes it distinct from astral projection. In most instances, bilocation is said to be involuntary and not to have been directed by the individual concerned in terms of time or space. Example of bilocation is when in 1774, St. Alphonsus Liguori is said to have gone into a trance while preparing for Mass. When he came out of the trance he reported that he had visited the bedside of the dying Pope Clement XIV. His presence is then said to have been confirmed by those attending the Pope despite his being 4 days travel away, and not appearing to have left his original location.

Channeling (mediumistic) -
The claimed process of receiving messages or inspiration from invisible beings or spirits. Channeling is a process whereby an individual (the "channeler") claims to have been invaded by a spirit entity which speaks through the channeler. Channeling can basically be defined as the process of receiving and relaying information from an outside entity while in an altered state of consciousness. The consciousness level varies from individual to individual, from deep trance to a very light meditation-like state. It appears that the channeler must go into this altered mental state to get in "synch" or reach a compatible vibrational level with the entity to be channeled. Entities that people claim to channel are as varied as the channelers themselves - angels, demons, spirits, aliens, higher dimensional entities, dead relatives and friends, and even living people in some cases. Channeling can take many forms and is not just a trance-like state. many of the psychic tools we are familiar with are actually forms of channeling, including psychic healing, automatic writing, seances, and ouija board usage. As anyone who has heard a ouija board horror story knows, channeling by inexperienced people can be a dangerous proposition
Chupacabra -
Spanish for Goat sucker. A cryptid rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. The name comes from the animal's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, especially goats. Supposedly a heavy creature, the size of a small bear, with a row of spines reaching from the neck to the base of the tail. Biologists and wildlife management officials view the chupacabra as an urban legend
Clairvoyant -
(from 17th century French with clair meaning "clear" and voyance meaning "seeing") is the purported ability to gain information about an object, location or physical event through means other than the known human senses, a form of extra-sensory perception. A person said to have the ability of clairvoyance is referred to as a clairvoyant ("one who sees clear"). The words "clairvoyance" and "psychic" are often used to refer to many different kinds of paranormal sensory experiences, but there are more specific names that you will find listed in this dictionary
Clairalience / Clairolefactorance (smelling) -
In the field of parapsychology, clairalience [presumably from late 17th century French clair (clear) & alience (smelling)] is a form of extra-sensory perception wherein a person acquires psychic knowledge primarily by means of smelling
Clairaudient (hearing/listening) -
The psychic ability to hear voices and sounds that are inaudible to the normal human ear. In the field of parapsychology, clairaudience [from late 17th century French clair (clear) & audience (hearing)] is a form of extra-sensory perception wherein a person acquires information by paranormal auditory means. It is often considered to be a form of clairvoyance. Clairaudience is essentially the ability to hear in a paranormal manner, as opposed to paranormal seeing (clairvoyance) and feeling (clairsentience). Clairaudient people have psi-mediated hearing. Clairaudience may refer not to actual perception of sound, but may instead indicate impressions of the "inner mental ear" similar to the way many people think words without having auditory impressions. But it may also refer to actual perception of sounds such as voices, tones, or noises which are not apparent to other humans or to recording equipment. For instance, a clairaudient person might claim to hear the voices or thoughts of the spirits of persons who are deceased. Clairaudience may be positively distinguished from the voices heard by the mentally ill when it reveals information unavailable to the clairaudient person by normal means (including cold reading or other magic tricks), and thus may be termed "psychic" or paranormal
Claircognizance (knowing) -
In the field of parapsychology, claircognizance [presumably from late 17th century French clair (clear) & cognizance (< ME cognisaunce < OFr conoissance, knowledge)] is a form of extra-sensory perception wherein a person acquires psychic knowledge primarily by means of intrinsic knowledge. It is the ability to know something without knowing how or why you know it
Clairgustance / Clairambience (tasting) -
In the field of parapsychology, clairgustance is defined as a form of extra-sensory perception that allegedly allows one to taste a substance without putting anything in one's mouth. It is claimed that those who possess this ability are able to perceive the essence of a substance from the spiritual or ethereal realms through taste
Clairsentient (feeling/touching) -
The psychic ability to feel things that are not normally felt by most people. In the field of parapsychology, clairsentience [From the French clair, “clear,” + sentience, “feeling,” ultimately derived from the Latin clarus, “clear,” + sentiens, derived from sentire, “to feel”] is a form of extra-sensory perception wherein a person acquires psychic knowledge primarily by means of feeling. In addition to parapsychology, the term also plays a role in some religions. For example: clairsentience is one of the six human special functions mentioned or recorded in Buddhism. It is an ability that can be obtained at advanced meditation level. Generally the term refers to a person who can feel the vibration of other people. There are many different degrees of clairsentience ranging from the perception of diseases of other people to the thoughts or emotions of other people. The ability differs from third eye in that this kind of ability can not have a vivid picture in the mind. Instead, a very vivid feeling can form. Psychometry is related to clairsentience. The word stems from psyche and metric, which means "to measure with the mind"
Cleansing -
A less extravagant (not less religious) form of exorcism that is done to remove spirits from dwellings. A Christian cleansing is performed using annointing oil and holy water and through the power of the name and the blood of Christ
Cold Reading -
A technique often used by mentalists, fortune tellers, psychics, and mediums to determine details about another person in order to convince them that the reader knows much more about a subject than he or she actually does. Even without prior knowledge of a person, a practiced cold reader can still quickly obtain a great deal of information about the subject by carefully analyzing the person's body language, clothing or fashion, hairstyle, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race or ethnicity, level of education, manner of speech, place of origin, etc. Cold readers commonly employ high probability guesses about the subject, quickly picking up on signals from their subjects as to whether their guesses are in the right direction or not, and then emphasizing and reinforcing any chance connections the subjects acknowledge while quickly moving on from missed guesses
Cold Spot -
An unexplained area of localized coldness, or sudden drops in temperature, that are said to be the result of paranormal activity. An area where the temperature is lower than the surrounding environment. Cold spots are believed to be created when a ghost is presence within that area. The temperature variances observed in cold spots is said to be the result of ghost or other spirit-like entity using up local energy (including heat) in the process of manifestation, or in order to fuel some other form of activity. Ghost hunters often carry infrared thermometers (which can only detect surface temperatures, rather than ambient air temperatures), to detect and document the presence of cold spots in the ambient air of locations that are reputed to be haunted. Ghost hunting organizations advise that they be checked from several different angles in order to confirm their existence and features. Some ghost hunters warn against using cold spots as a paranormal indicator because cold spots can often be explained by natural temperature variances
Collective Apparition -

Collective Apparition –
An apparition seen by several people at the same time. When several individuals, independently or simultaneously, observe the same ghost under conditions that make deception or suggestion unlikely, the event can no longer be interpreted as a totally subjective experience. Collective cases of this sort account for approximately eight percent of the total number of reported apparitions. Collective cases are more common when several potential observers are present in a group situation
Crisis Apparition –
An apparition in which a person is seen within a few hours of an important crisis such as death, accident or sudden illness. The figure or the voice of a living person who is experiencing a crisis--such as an accident or a death--is seen or heard by another person (the person having the Crisis Apparition experience). Typically, the ghosts appear only once to a special loved one who may be many miles away at the time of the accident. This phenomenon can also manifest in the person hearing a voice of a friend or loved one with some message or warning while the person who is heard speaking is no where near and totally unaware that this has occurred. Most of these crisis apparitions occur at a moment of great crisis or death when a person is in some form of danger or pain. The person in crisis is not aware that they are doing this. It is explained and often agreed that these apparitions are the externalization of an unconsciously received telepathic impressions

The experience of déjà vu is usually accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity, and also a sense of "eeriness", "strangeness", or "weirdness". The "previous" experience is most frequently attributed to a dream, although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience "genuinely happened" in the past
Demon -
An inferior deity (to God and His angels) spoken of in religious text as pure evil. An evil spirit. A source or agent of evil, harm, distress, or ruin, usually daemon : an attendant power or spirit. Demons are the fallen angels from Heaven. They are the 1/3 of the Heavenly angels that followed satan when God cast him out of Heaven and down to the earthly plane. They were cast down with him and they exist in a plane above us that lies inbetween Heaven and earth (the third realm), and operate in our earthly plane as malevolent spirits oppressing and posessing humans. Just as in the Heavenly angelic army (God's army), demons, which are the army of satan; have ranks of authority and power. There are also different regimens of demons and they are called Powers and Principalities. Both groups are rulers of the dark world. The "Powers" are demons that plague individual people. Principalities are demons of location. To explain Principalities better, the difference between this entity and a Power, specific areas may have a particular sin that is occurring more abundantly then in another area, for example there is more homosexuality in Philidelphia then in St. Louis statistically speaking. The demon of homosexuality is operating in Philidelphia. They are demons of influence of a particular sin nature and influence the inhabitants of the area, where they are present operating, to take on that sin nature, and they draw persons of that nature to that area. A "Power" attacks individual people, whereas a principality inhabits locations, citys, dwellings and structures
Direct Voice Phenomenon (DVP) –
A paranormally produced voice, often in seances conducted in the presense of a physical medium. An auditory “spirit” voice that is spoken directly to the sitters at a séance. The word is also used to describe the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection. They are generally regarded as harbingers of bad luck. In some traditions, a doppelgänger seen by a person's friends or relatives portends illness or danger, while seeing one's own doppelgänger is an omen of death. In Norse mythology, a vardøger is a ghostly double who precedes a living person and is seen performing their actions in advance
Earth Lights -
Luminous phenomena typically shaped in ball form or irregular patches of light appearing randomly and defying explanation. Balls of light that appear to issue directly from the earth, and often appear repeatedly in specific locations. The term was coined by Paul Devereux in 1982; but prior to that they were known as spooklights
Earthbound –

Electromagnetic Field (EMF) -
A physical field produced by electrically charged objects. It affects the behaviour of charged objects in the vicinity of the field. The electromagnetic field extends indefinitely throughout space and describes the electromagnetic interaction. It is one of the four fundamental forces of nature (the others are gravitation, the weak interaction, and the strong interaction). The field can be viewed as the combination of an electric field and a magnetic field. The electric field is produced by stationary charges, and the magnetic field by moving charges (currents); these two are often described as the sources of the field. The way in which charges and currents interact with the electromagnetic field is described by Maxwell's equations and the Lorentz force law
Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) -
The use of audio equipment to capture voices and sounds of the dead where there are no physical presences in the area where the recordings are being taken. Sections of static noise on the radio or electronic recording media that are interpreted by paranormal investigators as voices speaking words usually attributed to ghosts or spirits. Recording EVP has become a technique of those who attempt to contact the souls of dead loved ones or during ghost hunting activities. In addition to deceased spirits, various paranormal investigators say that EVP could be due to psychic echoes from the past, psychokinesis unconsciously produced by living people, and the thoughts of aliens. According to parapsychologist Konstantin Raudive, who popularized the idea, EVP are typically brief, usually the length of a word or short phrase
Elementals –
Spiritualists commonly refer to this term to describe mean or angry spirits sometimes also called “Earth Spirits”. An elemental is a mythological being first appearing in the alchemical works of Paracelsus. Traditionally, there are four types: 1.) gnomes, earth elementals 2.) undines, water elementals 3.) sylphs, air elementals 4.) salamanders, fire elementals. The exact term for each type varies somewhat from source to source, though these four are now the most usual. Most of these beings are found in folklore as well as alchemy; their names are often used interchangeably with similar beings from folklore. The sylph, however, is rarely encountered outside of alchemical contexts. The basic concept of an elemental refers to the ancient idea of elements as fundamental building blocks of nature. In the system prevailing in the Classical world, there were four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. This paradigm was highly influential in Medieval natural philosophy, and Paracelsus evidently intended to draw a range of mythological beings into this paradigm by identifying them as belonging to one of these four elemental types. In mysticism, magic and alchemy, an elemental is a creature (usually a spirit) that is attuned with, or composed of, one of the classical elements: air, earth, fire and water. The elements balance each other out through opposites: water quenches fire, fire boils water, earth contains air, air erodes earth. The concept of elementals seems to have been conceived by Paracelsus in the 16th century, though he did not in fact use the term "elemental" or a German equivalent. He noted that undines are similar to humans in size, while sylphs are rougher, bigger, longer, and stronger. Gnomes are short, while salamanders are long, narrow, and lean
EMF Detector -
A device that measures and detects changes in the electromagnetic field
Empath -
In the paranormal and some works of science fiction and fantasy, empathy is described as a paranormal or psychic ability to sense the emotions of others, as opposed to telepathy, which allows one to perceive thoughts as well. A person who has that ability is also called an "empath" or "telempath" in this context. Occasionally these empaths are also able to project their own emotions, or to affect the emotions of others. As a result, empath is a term coming into common usage to refer to a person with a feeling expanded sensitivity or clairsentience
Energy -
Quantum Physics tells us that everything is made of energy. Ghosts and spirits may be energy that no longer occupies a body. If so, that energy may be felt and it may be measurable. Energy may also be used by an intelligent entity for manifestations
Entity -

Evocation (Call forth) -
The act of calling or summoning a spirit, demon, god or other supernatural agent, in the Western mystery tradition. Comparable practices exist in many religions and magical traditions. To "invoke" is to "call forth", just as to "evoke" is to "call in"
Experimental Apparition -
Defined as type of apparition as a double a person has intentionally projected to appear before someone else. It is considered a double and not an astral form because the person is oblivious to the actions of his or her double
Exorcism -
The practice of evicting demons or other evil spiritual entities from a person or place which they are believed to have possessed (taken control of). The practice is quite ancient and part of the belief system of many religions. The person performing the exorcism, known as an exorcist, is often a member of the clergy, or an individual thought to be graced with special powers or skills. The exorcist may use prayers, and religious material, such as set formulas, gestures, symbols, icons, amulets, etc.. The exorcist invokes God, Jesus and/or several different angels and archangels to intervene with the exorcism. In general, possessed persons are not regarded as evil in themselves, nor wholly responsible for their actions. Therefore practitioners regard exorcism more as a cure than as a punishment. The mainstream rituals usually take this into account, making sure that there is no violence to the possessed, only that they be tied down if there is potential for violence
Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) -
The purported ability to acquire information by paranormal means independent of any known physical senses or deduction from previous experience. Psychic abilities such as telepathy, the sensing of thoughts or feelings without help from the 5 known senses, precognition, the knowledge of future events, and clairvoyance, the awareness of people, objects or events without the help of the 5 known senses. ESP is also sometimes casually referred to as a sixth sense, gut instinct, a hunch, a weird vibe or an intuition. The term implies sources of information currently unexplained by science
Extra -

False Awakening –
An event in which someone dreams they have awoken from sleep. This illusion of having awakened is very convincing to the person. After a false awakening, people will often dream of performing daily morning rituals, believing they have truly awakened. A dream in which a false awakening takes place is sometimes colloquially referred to as a "double dream", or a "dream within a dream. A false awakening may occur either following an ordinary dream or following a lucid dream (one in which the dreamer has been aware of dreaming). Particularly if the false awakening follows a lucid dream, the false awakening may turn into a ‘pre-lucid dream', that is, one in which the dreamer may start to wonder if they're really awake and may or may not come to the correct conclusion. A false awakening has significance to the simulation hypothesis which states that what we perceive as "true" reality is in truth an illusion as evidenced by our minds' inability to distinguish between reality and dreams. Therefore, advocates of the simulation hypothesis argue that the probability of our "true" reality being a simulated reality is affected by the prevalence of false awakenings. Certain aspects of life may be dramatized, or out of place in false awakenings. Things may seem wrong: details, like the painting on a wall, not being able to talk or difficulty reading (purportedly reading in lucid dreams is often difficult or impossible). In some experiences, the human senses are heightened, or changed. For instance, one may be able to see things in greater detail, or lesser detail, or one may feel an intense burst of fear and anxiety, or possibly pleasure. Because the dreamer is still dreaming after a false awakening, it is possible for there to be more than one false awakening in a single dream. Often, dreamers will seem to have awakened, begin eating breakfast, brushing teeth, and so on and then find themselves back in bed, begin daily morning rituals, believe that they have awakened, and so forth
Family Apparitions -

Ghost Ship -
In modern English, the term ghost ship has come to denote at least one of three separate (though occasionally overlapping) definitions, all of which involving, in one respect or other, unexplained circumstances. Historically, the term has been used to refer to reported sightings of apparitions over water that have appeared in the form of maritime sailing ships, often after having previously been known to have sunk, or to derelict vessels found floating with no crew. In fiction, ghost ships have often been vessels crewed by some manner of spectral or non-living beings

The ghul is a devilish type of jinn believed to be sired by Iblis. The female form is given as "ghouleh" in Muhawi and Kanaana. The plural is "ghilan". The ghoul is a desert-dwelling, shapeshifting demon that can assume the guise of an animal, especially a hyena. It lures unwary travellers into the desert wastes to slay and devour them. The creature also preys on young children, robs graves, and eats the dead. Because of the latter habit, the word ghoul is sometimes used to refer to an ordinary human such as a grave robber, or to anyone who delights in the macabre

Halloween -
Also known as “All Hallows Eve”, is the night of October 31st. Originated under the name of "Samhain" as a Pagan festival among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain, after which Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the times of the year when spirits can make contact with the physical world, and when magic is most potent

Hellhound / Black Shuck –
A spectral death omen in the form of a ghostly dog. Black Shuck or Old Shuck is the name given to a ghostly black dog which is said to roam the Norfolk, Essex and Suffolk coastline. For centuries, inhabitants of East Anglia have told tales of a large black hellhound with malevolent flaming eyes (or in some variants of the legend a single eye) that are red or alternatively green. They are described as being 'like saucers'. According to reports, the beast varies in size and stature from that of simply a large dog to being the size of a horse. The legends of Black Shuck roaming the Anglian countryside date back to the time of the Vikings. His name may derive from the Anglo-Saxon word scucca meaning "demon", or possibly from the local dialect word shucky meaning "shaggy" or "hairy". Sometimes Black Shuck is referred to as the Doom Dog. It is said that his appearance bodes ill to the beholder, although not always. More often than not, stories tell of Black Shuck terrifying his victims, but leaving them alone to continue living normal lives. Many other black dogs exhibit a similar trait. Sometimes Black Shuck has appeared headless, and at other times he appears to float on a carpet of mist. According to folklore, the spectre often haunts graveyards, sideroads, crossroads and dark forests. Black Shuck is also said to haunt Beeston Bump, a hill close to Beeston Regis and Sheringham

Hot Reading –
A devious or fraudulent reading in which the reader has been given prior knowledge of the sitter. The use of foreknowledge when giving a psychic reading. The reader can gain information about the sitter (person getting the reading) through a variety of means, such as research or overhearing a conversation. Hot reading is commonly used in conjunction with cold reading (where no foreknowledge is available) and can explain how a psychic reader can get a specific claimed "hit" of accurate information. This technique is suspected by many in the skeptic community as being used by some television psychics in conjunction with cold reading. The psychics may have clients schedule their appearance ahead of time, and then send collaborators to people's homes to collect information while posing as religious missionaries, magazine sales people, or the like. Such visitors can gain a wide understanding of a person from examining their home. The "psychic" may then be briefed on the information and where the person will sit in the audience

Refers to the ghostly lights sometimes seen at night or twilight — often over bogs. It looks like a flickering lamp, and is sometimes said to recede if approached. They are often called spooklights or ghost lights by folklorists and paranormal enthusiasts in the United States. Sometimes the phenomenon is classified by the observer as a ghost, fairy, or elemental, and a different name is used. Some define as a phosphorescent or spectral light that that is alleged to be an indication of death. This phenomenon is thought to be caused by spontaneous combustion of gases emitted by rotting organic matter

Incubus -
A demonic entity capable of sexually arousing and sometimes assaulting women. In Western medieval legend, an incubus (plural incubi) is a demon in male form supposed to lie upon sleepers, especially women, in order to have physical relations with them. The disembodied person has elected for some reason to stay or maybe just visit the physical world, due to a connection with a person, place or thing. Intelligent hauntings may also occur due to a spirit's compelling need to deliver a message from the other side of the grave, or to watch over loved ones. In addition, it is also plausible that intelligent hauntings occur due to attachments the ghostly person feels through memories, trauma, tragedy or any other emotional tie. Intelligent hauntings manifest typically in what some may consider "signs." Hiding or moving objects, doors opening and closing, strange sounds, spiritual presence (goosebumps, eg), disturbance of electrical devices are all examples of ghosts attempting to gain someone's attention and communicate from the spirit realm

Light Trance Medium -
A person whom spirits can communicate through without going into a deep trance state. Light trance states occur naturally to everyone throughout the day. Daydreaming is light trance. Everyone who drives a car has had the experience of driving a familiar route, getting lost in thought, and then missing an exit, or winding up at the destination, but not remembering the trip. That is light trance. If you get absorbed in a novel or movie and lose track of time, that is light trance. In light trance, the breathing is steady and even, the muscles are somewhat relaxed, and the attention is fixed. This level of relaxation is ideal for concentrating, meditating, and visualizing. The spirit wishing to communicate through them does not possess light trance mediums
Lucid Dreaming -
Also known as a conscious dream, is a dream in which the person is aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress. When the dreamer is lucid, he or she can actively participate in the dream environment without any of the inhibitions or limitations that otherwise would feel natural to persons who incorrectly believe they are in the "real" waking world. Lucid dreams can be extremely real and vivid depending on a person's level of self-awareness during the lucid dream. A lucid dream can begin in one of two ways. A dream-initiated lucid dream (DILD) starts as a normal dream, and the dreamer eventually concludes that he or she is dreaming, while a wake-initiated lucid dream (WILD) occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state with no apparent lapse in consciousness. A dream state in which one is conscious enough to recognize that one is in the dream state and is then able to control dream events
Lucifer (satan) -
Name means the "lightbearer." Lucifer is the leader of the demon spirits, which are angels that were banished from Heaven by God after they revolted against Him, along with satan
Luminous Phenomena -
A frequent occurrence in physical mediumship. On rare occasions such phenomena have been witnessed in apparent independence of mediumistic conditions. The experience of strange lights or glows, often around objects or people. These lights seem to have be the result of an outpouring of the combined psychic forces that religious ecstasy supposedly generates. Religious enthusiasm and ecstasy in general have often been reported to be accompanied by luminous phenomena. The Bible says that Jesus was transfigured before his disciples and that his face shown as the sun and his garments were white as light (Matt. 17:2). As Paul walked to Damascus, he encountered a light from heaven that shone around him (Acts 9:3). The saints and martyrs spoke of an interior illumination. St. Ignatius Loyola was seen surrounded by a brilliant light while he prayed and his body shone with light when he was levi-tated; St. Columba was said to have been continually enveloped in a dazzling, golden light, reminiscent of what is today termed an aura. This light or flame, according to communications obtained by Hester Dowden, appears to be pale, "a clear white fire" that seems to grow more vivid as the medium gets into better touch with the spirit world. It has been suggested that spectral lights may have a psychic origin. The fire of St. Bernardo was studied in 1895 in Quargnento by a Professor Garzino. It was a mass of light that wandered every night from the church to the cemetery and returned after midnight. A similar light was observed at Berbenno di Valtellina. The light passed through trees without burning them. The phenomenon has not been explained by reference to known chemical laws. The main difficulty that such lights present is the absence of a human organism to which their origin could be traced. But such an absence is also noted in uninhabited haunted houses where the human link is strongly emphasized
Lycanthropy -
The ability or power of a human being to undergo transformation into a wolf, or wolf-like characteristics. The term comes from Greek lykánthropos. The word lycanthropy is sometimes used generically for any transformation of a human into animal form, though the precise term for that is technically "therianthropy". Sometimes, "zoanthropy" is used instead of "therianthropy". There is also a mental illness called lycanthropy in which a patient believes he or she is, or has transformed into, an animal and behaves accordingly. This is sometimes referred to as clinical lycanthropy to distinguish it from its use in legends
Macro-PK -
Term used to denote the effects of psychokinesis (paranormal movements) that, like table turning, are large enough to be observed by the naked eye. The opposite to this is Micro-PK, where the effects cannot be directly observed but only inferred from the statistical analysis of data

Marian Apparitions –
An event in which the Virgin Mary is believed to have supernaturally appeared to one or more persons regardless of their religious faith. They are often given names based on the town in which they were reported, or on the sobriquet which was given to Mary on the occasion of the apparition. They have been interpreted in psychological terms as pareidolia, and in religious terms as theophanies. Apparitions sometimes recur at the same site over an extended period of time. In the majority of Marian apparitions only a few people can see Mary. An exception to this is at Zeitoun, where thousands claimed to have seen her over a period of three years

Motor Automatism –
Bodily movement or functions that are accompanied but not controlled by consciousness. The involuntary functioning of an organ or other body structure that is not under conscious control, such as the beating of the heart or the dilation of the pupil of the eye. The reflexive action of a body part. A term indicating organic functions, or inhibitions, not controlled by the conscious self. The word "automatism" is actually a misnomer, as the acts, or inhibitions, are only automatic from the viewpoint of personal consciousness and they may offer the characteristic features of voluntary acts on the part of another consciousness. F. W. H. Myers divided the phenomena of automatism into two principal classes: motor-automatism (the movement of the limbs, head, or tongue by an inner motor impulse beyond the conscious will) and sensory automatism (externalization of perceptions in inner vision and audition). The first he called "active," the second "passive" automatism, stressing, however, that the impulse from which it originates may be much the same in that one case as in the other. This place of origin is either the subconscious self or a discarnate intelligence. Myers suggested that the excitation of the motor or sensory centers may take place either through the subconscious (subliminal) mind, or the communicating intelligence may find some direct way, for which he proposed the name "telergic." The phenomena of automatism are often accompanied by organic disturbances, or changes in vasomotor, circulatory, and respiratory systems. The sensory impressions are sometimes accompanied by a feeling of malaise, which is noticeable even in such simple cases as telepathy. In the phenomena of dowsing, the disturbance is much keener.(See automatic writing and telergic)
Near-Death Experience (NDE) -
A broad range of personal experiences associated with impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations ranging from detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, extreme fear, total serenity, security, or warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light, which some people interpret as a deity or spiritual presence. Many cultures and individuals revere NDEs as a paranormal and spiritual glimpse into the afterlife. Such cases are usually reported after an individual has been pronounced clinically dead, or otherwise very close to death, hence the entitlement near-death experience. Many NDE reports, however, originate from events that are not life threatening
Necromancy -
A form of divination in which the practitioner seeks to summon "operative spirits" or "spirits of divination", for multiple reasons, from spiritual protection to wisdom. The practice of communicating with the dead to obtain knowledge. Since the Renaissance, necromancy has come to be associated more broadly with black magic and demon-summoning in general, sometimes losing its earlier, more specialized meaning. Early necromancy is likely related to shamanism, which calls upon spirits such as the ghosts of ancestors. Classical necromancers addressed the dead in "a mixture of high-pitch squeaking and low droning", comparable to the trance-state mutterings of shamans
Necronomicon -
The book of the dead
Obsession -
The second stage of a haunting where the invading entity (demonic entity) begins to exert its power over its victim. Oppression is the first stage where the demonic spirit oppresses its influences upon the person. The demonic entity works on the mind of the person, placing thoughts of negative things. Obsession is second stage, because the person begins obsessing on the interjected thoughts and in that obsessing what was once just a thought then takes root and becomes an action on the part of the opressed person. Continued oppression without divine intervention will lead to possession. (See oppression and possession)
Occultism -
Esoteric systems of belief and practice that assume the existence of mysterious forces and entities. The study of the supernatural. A belief in occult powers and the possibility of bringing them under human control
Old Hag Syndrome –
A nocturnal phenomena that involves a feeling of immobilization, suffocation, odd smells and feelings and is sometimes accompanied my immense fear. You wake up unable to move, barely able to breathe, you feel an oppressive weight on your chest and you sense some evil presence in the room. The name of the phenomenon comes from the superstitious belief that a witch - or an old hag - sits or "rides" the chest of the victims, rendering them immobile. Although that explanation isn't taken very seriously nowadays, the perplexing and often very frightening nature of the phenomenon leads many people to believe that there are supernatural forces at work - ghosts or demons. Deliverance ministers and ministries view this phenomena as a demonic presence oppressing a person in a the relaxed state of sleep or trying to fall asleep. (See Sleep Paralysis)
Oppression -
The first stage of a haunting where the invading demonic entity attempts to gain access to the location or person targeted for victimization. The demonic spirit begins working on the persons mind, interjecting thoughts of negative behaviors and actions. When the person allows the interjections of these thoughts without casting them down and out, it leads to obsession and the actual acting out of the negative thoughts and actions the demonic spirit is interjecting. (See possession for detail and differences between oppression and possession)
Orb -
A spherical shaped, translucent mass of energy resembling a ball or globe of light. Any of the concentric spheres in old astronomy surrounding the earth and carrying the celestial bodies in their revolutions. A photographed (still, video, or IR, rarely seen with the naked eye) anomaly that, in theory, represents an ongoing 'spirit' of a deceased person. The mass of energy appears as a translucent ball of light and may occasionally seem to be moving. There are several classifications depending on size and color. This is a highly controversial subject since there are many reasonable circumstances that identify this as environmental (dust, rain, snow, dirty lens, insects, reflection, lens flare etc.). Although this is the most photographed phenomena, there has been no substantial proof that the balls of light are associated with 'ghosts', the dead, or any paranormal behavior. Orbs have been known to interact with people
Ouija Board -
A game board that is used to communicate with spirits
Out-of-body experience (OBE) –
A sensation or experience in which ones self or spirit travels to a different location than their physical body (See Astral Projection)
Outward Manifestation -
The physical manifestation of paranormal activity
Paranormal -
Phenomena which seem to defy the known laws of science. An umbrella term used to describe unusual phenomena or experiences that lack an obvious scientific explanation. In parapsychology, it is used to describe the ostensibly psychic phenomena of telepathy, extra-sensory perception, psychokinesis, ghosts, and hauntings. The term is also applied to UFOs, some creatures that fall under the scope of cryptozoology, purported phenomena surrounding the Bermuda Triangle, and other non-psychical subjects
Parapsychology -
The study of ostensibly paranormal events including extrasensory perception, psychokinesis, and survival of consciousness after death. Parapsychological research involves a variety of methodologies including laboratory research and fieldwork, which is conducted at privately funded laboratories and some universities around the world though there are fewer universities actively sponsoring parapsychological research today than in years past. Experiments conducted by parapsychologists have included the use of random number generators to test for evidence of psychokinesis, sensory-deprivation Ganzfeld experiments to test for extrasensory perception, and research trials conducted under contract to the United States government to investigate the possibility of remote viewing
Parapsychologist -
One who studies parapsychology
Percipient -
A person who sees (i.e., perceives) an apparition. Having the power of perceiving, especially perceiving keenly and readily. A general term used in parapsychology to denote an individual who possesses or may possess extrasensory perception capabilities. In ESP testing such an individual receives information from the agent or sender. The term percipient is not frequently used though

Place Memory -
Information about past events that apparently is stored in the physical environment
Planchette -
The triangular instrument used as a pointer to answer questions on a Ouija board
Plasma -
Plasma is defined by bluish-white light caused by the ionization of the surrounding area. The ionization process releases photons from the bond of atoms causing a visible glow. Plasma may be created when an invisible electromagnetic force or high energy field moves invisibly through an air mass. In physics and chemistry, plasma is typically an ionized gas. Plasma is considered to be a distinct state of matter, apart from gases, because of its unique properties. "Ionized" refers to presence of one or more free electrons, which is not bound to an atom or molecule. The free electric charges make the plasma electrically conductive so that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields. Plasmas are the most common phase of matter. Some estimates suggest that up to 99% of matter in the entire visible universe is plasma
Poltergeist -
A German word that means "Noisy or mischievous ghost." A destructive spirit that has the ability to move objects by solidifying the ambient air which results in the movement and/or teleportation of objects. When a spirit enters the physical body of a person. This phenomenon is also associated with noises, rapping, levitating and throwing of objects, electrical problems, as well as other physical manifestations. These events usually come on suddenly and end just as fast. They can last for days, months or a few years. The longer lasting ones seem to occur for a few days each year. Many of these cases have been attributed to a specific person, often seems to be centered on individuals in severe stress, in the household. In most cases, this specific person, known as an agent, is a young child entering the puberty stage of life. It is believed that the agent causes an involuntary type of involuntary type of psychokinesis, causing the disturbances. Unlike other ghosts, poltergeists can move from one location to another, following the person they've chosen to torment
Portal -
Literally, a doorway or gate, this term suggests a specific location through which spirits enter and leave our world. When there are multiple phenomena in a confined area, such as an abundance of unexplained orbs, some people call this a "ghost portal.”
Possession (Versus Oppression) -
Often referred to as cases in which a person's body is apparently taken over by another personality or entity. However, it goes much deeper then that. Man is comprised of three levels of being as described biblically. The body (mind), the spirit and the soul. The soul is the heart of man. True possession of man is rare, versus the pre-possession condition called "oppression" in which a demonic spirit can manipulate the man's body and behaviors. The first level of oppression stems from just being an influence upon the mind, not actually being in possession of the body but influencing it from the outside, influencing the mind of man to do things abnormal or out of characteristic traits, negative things. The taking action on the negative thought formations is caused by the next step called obsession, which really has more to do with the man himself rather then the demonic spirit oppressing him. The man himself begins obsessing on the demonically interjected thoughts. When this happens, the demonic spirit gets a little tighter grip and the man will put the thoughts into action, but it still just remains oppression at this time, not possession. If the man does not defeat the oppression of the spirits, eventually he will begin to enjoy the things the demon or demons are telling and manipulating him to do. They then gain further acess to the spirit of the man, replacing his moral ethics with their own. Although they are still an outside influence at this time, it is the last step before full possession. It begins with oppression, the interjection of the negative thoughts, and if not cast down the person begins obsessing on those negative thoughts, called obsession, and starts putting the thoughts into action. Possession is when the demonic spirit has influenced the man's mind, then the man's spirit which is still outside influence, but with continued non-deliverance of the spirit, the demon spirits then gain entrance to the soul or the heart of man. The heart is like the house of the man. A visitor can come over and influence the home owner to have a party and mess up the house, but the visitor does not inhabit the house (Oppression). Possession is when the visitor comes into the house and takes up full residency and control, taking the home owner hostage so to speak and making him do his will. Most persons are merely oppressed by demonic spirits and not possessed. Note that mediums will "allow" a spirit to enter their body for the purpose of communication. In demonic possession, the entity will not leave of its own will. During medium possession, the host (person) remains in the body and in control. In full possession, the spirit of the host is submerged within the body, displaced from having control over their own body, but not displaced out of the physical body. When posession occurs, there is always more then one demonic entity at work. There is at least one other demonic enitity besides the main entity that has posessed the man, and that is the demonic entity of spiritual blindness. Without the aid of the spirit of blindness, another entity could not gain control to possess a person. An exorcism is necessary to expel the possessing entitys
Postmortem Apparition -
Apparition that appears more than 12 hours after a person’s death
Precognition -
A form of extra-sensory perception where in a person is said to perceive information about places or events through paranormal means before they happen. A related term, presentiment, refers to information about future events which is said to be perceived as emotions. These terms are considered by some to be special cases of the more general term clairvoyance. Precognition is the most frequently reported of all extrasensory perception (ESP) experiences, occurring most often (60 percent to 70 percent) in dreams. It may also occur spontaneously in waking visions, auditory hallucinations, flashing thoughts entering the mind, and the sense of "knowing." Precognitive knowledge also may be induced through trance, channeling, mediumship, and divination. The difference between precognition, premonition, and prophecy: premonition generally involves knowledge of a future event while precognition involves the sense or feeling that something is going to happen; whereas all prophecy is precognition, but not all precognition is prophecy
Premonition -
A situation when future events are foreknown or forecast. They are attributed by some people to the presence of supernatural or paranormal abilities. However, the distinction between precognition and ordinary evidence-based predictions is sometimes not made sharply. "Premonition" may be defined to include or exclude ordinary predictions, and this means a fallacy of linguistic ambiguity can lead to an overly supernatural explanation for the accuracy of predictions
Presentiment -
Information about future events which is said to be perceived as emotions. A sense that something unpleasant is about to happen, a feeling of evil to come accompanied by feeling of apprehension and forebodingPsychic - The claimed ability to perceive things hidden from the senses through means of extra-sensory perception. A person with the ability to see, hear and feel by the use of senses other than the natural senses
Preternatural -
Diverging from or exceeding the common order of nature but not outside the natural order as distinguished from the supernatural
Provocation -
An effort to provoke or command a spirit to reveal itself
Psi –
A letter in the Greek alphabet that denotes psychic phenomena
Psychic -
The claimed ability to perceive things hidden from the senses through means of extra-sensory perception. The term also refers to theatrical performers who use techniques such as prestidigitation and cold reading to produce the appearance of having such abilities. Parapsychologists attempt to study what some believe are psychic phenomena using a variety of methods such as random number generators to test for psychokinesis or the Ganzfeld experiment to test for extra-sensory perception
Psychic Attack -
The manipulation of supernatural energies and forces. Psychic attacks occur when dark and negative energetic vibrations are sent from one individual to another individual or place creating disturbances in the energetic and physical bodies of the person or place. This negative energy can be called a spirit, an entity, a thought form or a dark negative energy. Each of these energies can create harmful effects within the person receiving them. Psychic attacks involve the manipulation and movement of different types of dark energies, entities and spirits. They involve the transferring of dark and negative energies into someone's physical and/or energetic bodies. Some of the dark energies and entities that find their way into physical and energetic bodies, and homes are sent without awareness, even though they are sent by humans. Others are sent intentionally to create harm and damage, often to control, manipulate or punish the individual. They can involve ritualistic techniques or ceremonies or use the psychic powers of the mind or a combination of both. It's difficult for anyone to penetrate an aura that is healthy and strong. Auras are weakened by repressed emotions, negative emotions, through the regular use of drugs and alcohol, through smoking cigarettes and a variety of diseases. The physical presence of fungus, parasites, worms, or metal, chemical or atomic poisons can seriously weaken an aura. It's important to understand that all illness begins in the aura and then eventually moves into the physical body. Therefore the care and protection of your energetic body is as important as the physical body so you can repel psychic attacks and stay strong and healthy. The dark and negative energies sent intentionally by others are called psychic attacks and can seriously affect humans and animals at a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Psychic attacks can include spells, voodoo, mantras, invocations, negative energy rays, or other types of black magic. They attack psyches and can produce debilitating effects on the overall health and energy level of the affected person. There are dark spirits and entities that can move into physical bodies and auras affecting what people think, speak, do, desire, and feel. The human who is invaded by these spirits or entities can take on the physical attributes, illnesses and behavior of the spirit or entity occupying the person to such a degree that there appears to be a complete personality change. We can draw dark energies, entities and spirits into ourselves without any influence whatsoever from external sources. Prolonged states of anger, rage, resentments, bitterness, vindictiveness, and many types of fears, will draw and attract these negative energies. It's normal to get angry or fearful when things happen in our lives. These occurrences do not draw the dark side in to us. It's the long-term and prolonged states that set up the energetic attraction. Ongoing repressed negative emotions can eventually turn into a certain type of entity
Psychic Cold -
This is a situation where one feels unnaturally cold. There are two types of psychic cold. The first, a spirit that is materializing draws energy from the environment. This results in a lowering of the ambient temperature. The second, the materializing spirit will draw energy from people that are present. The people will feel cold but a thermometer will not register a lowering of the ambient temperature. Sometimes situations of great stress can result in a similar type of cold without a drop in the ambient temperature
Psychic Echo -
When sounds from the past have mysteriously recorded themselves into the natural environment
Psychic Empath -
A psychic ability that picks up on the emotions of ghosts or those reading for. (see Clairsentient)
Psychokinesis (PK) -
The power of the mind to affect matter without physical contact, especially in inanimate and remote objects by the exercise of psychic powers. (See Retroactive PsychoKinesis)
Psychometry -
The ability or art of divining information about people or events associated with an object solely by touching or being near to it. A form of extra-sensory perception in which a psychic is said to be able to obtain information about an individual through paranormal means by making physical contact with an object that belongs to them. In recent years, the term has been superseded in favor of "token-object reading" so as to avoid potential confusion with the psychological term, "psychometry"
Pyrokinesis –
The ability to unconsciously control and sometimes in rare cases produce fire with their mind only. It literally means "to move fire," but more commonly denotes the ability to create and manipulate fire using only the mind
Qualitative Method -
A research method involving the collection of non-quantitative data (e.g., observations, interviews, subjective reports, case studies)
Quantitative Method -
A research method involving the collection and statistical analysis of numerical data
Radio Voice Phenomenon (RVP) -
Electronic voice phenomena, EVP, are sections of static noise on the radio or electronic recording media that are interpreted by paranormal investigators as voices speaking words usually attributed to ghosts or spirits. RVP is receiving the voice of a deceased human being through a regular radio, unlike a recording device that was left in a dwelling and has recorded a Evp that was spoken within the room
Reciprocal Apparition -
An extremely rare type of spirit phenomenon in which both the agent and percipient are able to see and respond to each other. An apparition of a living person that interacts with a person whom is aware of the presence
Recurring Apparitions -
Ghosts or spirits that appear in regular cycles, usually once a year. This may occur on a date that marks a significant event, such as a battle or death
Reincarnation -
The belief that some aspect of a person's being survives death and can be reborn in a new body at some future date
Remote Viewing –
Used by some psychics, this is a procedure in which the percipient or psychic attempts to become physically aware of the experience of an agent who is at a distant, unknown location through ESP
Residual Haunting -
Believed to be a psychic imprint of a scene that keeps repeating itself. With this type of haunting no interaction with the ghost occur. Many of the locations where these hauntings take place, experience an event or a series of events, which imprints itself on the atmosphere of a place. This event can suddenly discharge and play itself at various times. The events are not always visual either, they are often replayed as sounds and noises that have no explanation. Often the sounds and images recorded are related to traumatic events which took place at the location and caused some sort of disturbance, which we might call "psychic impression", to happen there. In other situations, the images have been created by events or actions that were repeated over and over again and cause an impression. These locations act as giant storage batteries, saving up the impressions of sights and sounds from the past. Then, as the years go by, these impressions appear again as if a film projector has started to run. Some believe that the building materials of the structure may absorb the energy. Apparitions are commonly reported but they will not notice the living persons around them and will usually repeat the same actions over and over again
Retroactive PsychoKinesis -
Psychokinesis, a form of psi, is a technique of mind over matter through invisible means; the apparent ability of humans to affect objects solely by the power of the mind. Examples of PK are movements of objects, bending of metals, and determining the outcome of events. It can occur spontaneously and deliberately which indicates it is both an unconscious and conscious process. "Retro PK" is capable of producing a “backwards acting in time” effect process in which an effect appears to precede it cause, counter to our usual assumptions that cause leads to effect
Retrocognition -
From the Latin retro meaning "backward, behind" and cognition meaning "knowing", is the alleged paranormal transfer of information about an event or object in the past. A person said to possess retrocognition can see into the past. Retrocognition is different from clairvoyance in that information is said to be gained from an object or event in the past, not from a contemporary event or object
Séance -
A meeting or gathering of people, usually lead by a medium to receive spiritualistic messages, manifestations or communication with the dead
Sensitive -
Someone who is aware or can detect paranormal events beyond the range of their five human senses
Shadow People -
Light will not pass through different densities or masses the same way. Because spirit energy has density it can create a shadow on the ground or the wall. The shadow is not alive but the matter (although dead) is casting the shadow. Shadows are relatively common and have been cast when orbs and vortex's are photographed. Shadows can be one of the harder anomalies to photograph because of their speed and color. Shadow people because of their dark forms are often considered to be evil
Shaman –
A member of certain tribal societies who acts as a medium between the visible world and an invisible spirit world and who practices magic or sorcery for purposes of healing, divination, and control over natural events
Shape Shifting -
Paranormal ability to assume the form of another person, an animal or other entity, a change from human form to animal form and vice versa. aA change in appearance from one person to another
Sheep –
An experiment in which the subject believes in the ability in which they are being tested
Simulcra –
This is a word used to describe the seeing of faces, figures and images in ordinary, everyday object such as rocks, foliage, etc.
Skeptic -
A person inclined to discount the reality of the paranormal and to be critical of parapsychological research. Generally seeks rational or scientific explanations for the phenomena studied by parapsychologists
Sleep Paralysis -
A common condition characterized by transient partial or total paralysis of skeletal muscles and areflexia that occurs upon awakening from sleep or less often while falling asleep. It actually is a medical condtion. It is a frightening form of paralysis that occurs when a person suddenly finds himself or herself unable to move for a few minutes, most often upon falling asleep or waking up. Sleep paralysis is due to an ill-timed disconnection between the brain and the body. The symptoms of sleep paralysis include sensations of noises, smells, levitation, paralysis, terror, and images of frightening intruders. Once considered very rare, about half of all people are now believed to experience sleep paralysis sometime during their life. It finds it way into paranormal dictionarys because it carries a lot of folklore, such as in African American culture, isolated sleep paralysis is commonly referred to as "the devil riding your back". In Hmong culture, sleep paralysis describes an experience called "dab tsog" or "crushing demon" from the compound phrase "dab" (demon) and "tsog" (crush). Often the sufferer claims to be able to see a tiny figure, no larger than a child, sitting on his or her chest. In Vietnamese culture, sleep paralysis is referred to as "ma de", meaning "held down by a ghost". Many people in this culture believe that a ghost has entered one's body, causing the paralyzed state. In Chinese culture, sleep paralysis is known as "body pressured by a ghost" or "bed pressured by a ghost." In Hungarian folk culture sleep paralysis is called "lidércnyomás" ("lidérc pressing") and can be attributed to a number of supernatural entities like "lidérc" (wraith), "boszorkány" (witch), "tündér" (fairy) or "ördögszeret?" (demon lover). In Iceland folk culture sleep paralysis is generally called having a "Mara". Mara is an old Icelandic word for a mare but has taken on the meaning for a sort of a devil that sits on ones chest at night, trying to suffocate the victim. Kurdish people call this phenomenon a "mottaka", they believe that some one, in a form of a ghost or perhaps an evil spirit, turns up on top the of the person in the middle of the night and suffocates him/her. Apparently this happens usually when some one has done something bad. n New Guinea, people refer to this phenomenon as "Suk Ninmyo", believed to originate from sacred trees that use human essence to sustain its life. The trees are said to feed on human essence during night as to not disturb the human's daily life, but sometimes people wake unnaturally during the feeding, resulting in the paralysis. # In Turkish culture, sleep paralysis is often referred to as "karabasan" ("The dark presser/assailer"). It is believed to be a creature which attacks people in their sleep, pressing on their chest and stealing their breath. In Mexico, it's believed that sleep paralysis is in fact the spirit of a dead person getting on the person and impeding movement, calling this "se me subió el muerto" (the dead person got on me). In many parts of the Southern United States, the phenomenon is known as a "hag", and the event is said to often be a sign of an approaching tragedy or accident. Ogun Oru is a traditional explanation for nocturnal disturbances among the Yoruba of Southwest Nigeria; ogun oru (nocturnal warefare) involves an acute night-time disturbance that is culturally attributed to demonic infiltration of the body and psyche during dreaming. Ogun oru is characterized by its occurrence, a female preponderance, the perception of an underlying feud between the sufferer's earthly spouse and a ;spiritual' spouse, and the event of bewitchment through eating while dreaming. The condition is believed to be treatable through Christian prayers or elaborate traditional rituals designed to exorcise the imbibed demonic elements. In Zimbabwean Shona culture the word Madzikirira is used to refer something really pressing one down. This mostly refers to the spiritual world in which some spirit--especially an evil one--tries to use its victim for some evil purpose. The people believe that witches can only be people of close relations to be effective, and hence a witches often try to use one's spirit to bewitch one's relatives. In Ethiopian culture the word Dukak is used. Dukak is believed to be some form of evil spirit that possesses people during their sleep. This experience is also believed to be related to use of Khat. Most Khat users experience sleep paralysis when quitting after a long time of use. In Ireland it is also known as "the hag." The expression originates from reports of an old woman that was believed to be seen near the sufferer during paralysis. Several studies have shown that African-Americans may be predisposed to isolated sleep paralysis also known as "the witch is riding you," or "the haint is riding you." In Pakistani culture, it is an encounter with evil jinns and demons. It is also assumed that it is due to the black magic performed by enemies and jealous persons. Curses could also result in ghoul haunting a person. Some homes and loactions are also haunted by these satanic beings
Soulless Apparition -
The image of an inanimate object
Specter -
A ghost or apparition. A visible disembodied spirit, or something that haunts or perturbs the mind
Spirit -
The soul, considered as departing from the body of a person at death. A supernatural being or essence. An angel or a demon. A being inhabiting or embodying a particular place, object, or natural phenomenon. An often malevolent being that is bodiless but can become visible, (demon spirit) a malevolent being that enters and possesses a human being. Spirits are believed to exist in an invisible realm that can only be seen under certain circumstances or by people with special abilities
Spirit Photography -
A spirit photograph captures the image of a ghost on film. Many of these are supposedly intended as a mere portrait of a living human being, but when the film is developed, an ethereal ghostly face or figure can be seen hovering near the subject. This may also incorporate orbs, vortexes, and mists to some degree
Spiritualism -
The belief system that the dead are able to communicate with the living, through an intermediary or medium
Stigmata -
From the Greek term stigma, which means "mark." In Christianity, it is believed that some people develop wounds which are just like those received by Jesus when he was crucified: wounds on each hand, one on the side, and one both ankles. It is believed that these marks are signs from God that the person suffering from them is holy. Occasionally wounds on the head, in the shape of a crown (copying the crown of thorns), and marks on either shoulder (representing the carrying of the cross and scourging) are evidence of stigmata too. Stigmata might also be invisible, marked by the pain of wounds in the classic places, or alternately invisible and visible. Stigmata are often accompanied by other bodily phenomena such as pain, blood, sweats, levitations, or even lameness or blindness, and they quite often occur in people who are already ill or are voluntarily abstaining from food for religious reasons
Subliminal Perception -
A visual or auditory message that is allegedly perceived psychologically, but not consciously. Perceiving without conscious awareness. Applied to a stimulus below the level of awareness and below the absolute threshold of stimulation, as when an auditory or visual presentation is too weak to have an effect, or at least any effect of which the subject is aware. All that takes place beneath the consciousness threshold—sensations, thoughts, and emotions that seldom emerge but form a consciousness quite as complex and coherent as the supraliminal one, since they demonstrate processes of mentation and exhibit a continuous chain of memory. F.W.H. Myers attributed most supernormal psychical phenomena to the subliminal self, but not as a complete explanation or exclusion of the spirit hypothesis. On the contrary, his inference was that if our incarnate selves may act in telepathy in at least apparent independence of the fleshly body, the presumption is strong that other spirits may exist independently of the body and may affect us in a similar manner. Myers divided the influence of the subliminal on the supraliminal into three main areas: (1) When the subliminal mentation cooperates with and supplements the supraliminal, without changing the apparent phase of personality, we have genius. (2) When subliminal operations change the apparent phase of personality from the state of waking toward the direction of trance, we have hypnotism. (3) When the subliminal mentation forces itself up through the supraliminal, without amalgamation, as in crystal vision, automatic writing, and so forth, we have sensory or motor automatism
Subjective Apparitions –
Hallucinations of apparitions or other phenomena that are created by our own minds. Paranormally speaking, apparitions that have been reported but are not discovered to be anything verifiable by a paranormal investigation. The only person experiencing anything is the person reporting the event
Succubus -
A demonic entity said to inspire lust in men and then assaulting them. In Western medieval legend, a succubus (plural succubi) or succuba (plural succubae) is a demon, who takes the form of a beautiful woman to seduce men, especially monks in dreams to have sexual relations. They draw energy from the men to sustain themselves, often until the point of exhaustion or death of the victim. According to the Malleus Maleficarum, or "Witches' Hammer", published against the recommendation of the Catholic Church in 1487 and officially banned in 1490, succubi would collect semen from the men they slept with, which incubi would then use to impregnate women thus explaining how demons could apparently sire children in spite of the traditional belief that demons were incapable of reproduction through generative or gestative means. Children so begotten were supposed to be those that were born deformed, or more susceptible to supernatural influences. The appearance of succubi varies, but in general they are depicted as alluring women with great beauty,[4][7] often with demonic batlike wings, and large breasts; they also have other demonic features, such as horns and cloven feet. Occasionally they appear as an attractive woman in dreams that the victim cannot seem to get off his mind. They lure males and in some cases, the male has seemed to fall "in love" with her. Even out of the dream she will not leave his mind. She will remain there slowly draining energy from him until death by exhaustion. Other sources say the demon will steal the male's soul through the act of intercourse.
Supernatural -
Of or relating to existence outside the natural world. As opposed to paranormal, the term "supernatural" often connotes divine or demonic intervention
Symbolic Apparition -
Many apparitions are symbolic and are trying to communicate a message by whom they appear to, what times, what they are wearing, what they are doing, etc.
Take-away Apparition -
The appearance of a deceased person beside a deathbed with the sole purpose of guiding the infirm to the afterlife
Telergic -
The excitation of the motor or sensory centers take place through the communicating intelligence in some direct way, such as a healing using a pendulum
Telekinesis -
"movement from the mind"), also known as psychokinesis, it is the purported ability of the mind to influence matter, time, space, or energy by means outside the currently known laws of physics. It has been called the most powerful of psychic powers, essentially the power of a god. Examples of psychokinesis could include distorting or moving an object, or influencing the output of a random number generator. The study of phenomena said to be psychokinetic is an aspect of parapsychology. Some paranormal researchers believe that psychokinesis exists and deserves further study, pointing to experimental results such as those done using random number generators
Telepathy (thought-transference) -
The purported transfer of information on thoughts or feelings between individuals by means other than the five classical senses. A person who is able to make use of telepathy is said to be able to read the minds of others. Telepathy, along with psychokinesis forms the main branches of parapsychological research, and many studies seeking to detect and understand telepathy have been done within the field. Within the field of parapsychology, telepathy is considered to be a form of extra-sensory perception (ESP) or anomalous cognition in which information is transferred through Psi. It is often categorized similarly to precognition and clairvoyance. Various experiments have been used to test for telepathic abilities. Among the most well known are the use of Zener cards and the Ganzfeld experiment. Parapsychology describes several different forms of telepathy, including latent telepathy and precognitive telepathy
Teleportation -
The movement of objects from one place to another, more or less instantaneously, without traveling through space. The concept has been widely used in science fiction. It should not be confused with quantum teleportation. Similar is apport, an earlier word used to describe what today might be called teleportation; and bilocation, when something or someone described as being a magician is said to be able to occupy two places simultaneously
Temporal Lobe Activity -
Electrical activity in the temporal lobes of the brain. Often associated with strange sensations, time distortions and hallucinations. Sometimes used as an explanation for seemingly paranormal experiences such as apparitions
Vortex -
Any spiral motion with closed streamlines is vortex flow. The motion of the fluid swirling rapidly around a center is called a vortex. The speed and rate of rotation of the fluid are greatest at the center, and decrease progressively with distance from the center. This is a swirling funnel shape when in motion. They can also appear long and narrow and having a tread like design. a spinning, often turbulent, flow of fluid. Some theorize this is a vehicle to transport spirits in the shape of orbs from their realm to ours
White Noise -
A random signal (or process) with a flat power spectral density. In other words, the signal's power spectral density has equal power in any band, at any centre frequency, having a given bandwidth. White noise is considered analogous to white light which contains all frequencies. White noise is a sound that contains every frequency within the range of human hearing (generally from 20 hertz to 20 kHz) in equal amounts. Most people perceive this sound as having more high-frequency content than low, but this is not the case. This perception occurs because each successive octave has twice as many frequencies as the one preceding it. A hiss-like sound, formed by combining all audible frequencies
