Show Me Paranormal Investigation ~ Pinehill Cemetery at Spook Hollow ~ Rolla/St. James

This investigation was performed at Pinehill Cemetery located on Spook Hollow Road situated inbetween Rolla and St. James, MO.
June 7th ~ 2008

Case details:

We actually did this investigation on a whim the same night that we investigated the Phelps Co. Historical Jail and Museum, so we arrived to the cemetery fairly late.

History of Pinehill Cemetery and Spook Hollow Road:

Spook Hollow is a well known gravel road that can be accessed on one end from Rolla and the other end which is in St. James in the Merimac Springs area, where the Snelson Brinker Cabin is located, which is another site we have investigated. Spook Hollow Rd. is known both for its atmospheric creepiness as well as its once upon a time bizarre inhabitants. Eight or so years ago, you could venture down Spook Hollow Rd. and just be freaked out by the things you seen along the way, such as a creepy old dilpitating farm house that the occupants would adorn the trees in the yard with baby dolls hanged by nooses. This house is gone now, but the old ruin of a school bus is still there, yet another oddity. The bus is set just off the side of the road and heavily graffited with satanic symbols and other negatives. People use to live in this bus, strange people who are now gone. As you get nearer to the dead end cemetery area from the St. James side, the trees on both sides of the road seem as if to lean their tops towards one another like a canopy over the road, causing a blockage of light and you can feel the temperature drop. The area was and still is known for its satanic activity. Satanic covens would hold their ritualistic celebrations and meetings in the woods down by the cemetery. In fact one of our team members inadvertantly intruded upon them one night and had the fright of her life. The cemetery was the 'scare and make out' site of the local teens of St. James, and you cannot go to St. James and ask about Spook Hollow Cemetery without young and old gathering around you with a tale of a ghostly experience. The location is a legend in St. James. Along with what seems to be a steady comfortable temperature year round, the cemetery also maintains an unsettling environment with its old moss coated headstones, many leaning this way and that. The grave markers are not in any particular order, many are falling down, many are no longer legible. Some are broken by time and the elements and possibly even vandals. It is officially named Pinehill, but the locals prefer to call it Spook Hollow Cemetery. One of the legends go that adult noises can be heard from a small house on the road leading to the cemetery where sacrifices once were made. This house is no longer there either. Other legends are that visitors report seeing strange images and phantom vehicles that reportedly disappear and reappear out of nowhere, flashlights stop working in the cemetery and a figure has been reported running along the road near the cemetery, and one group reported feeling lightheaded, dizzy and uneasy and experienced a constant “swirling wind” in their ears while in the cemetery. The whirling wind sound is common, but on the back side of the cemetery there is a bluff which could account for winds or wind sounds. The cemetery is surrounded by woods on all four sides once you enter, like an enclosure, and one cannot help but feel like they are being watched from the woods. It is a place where you can find entire families buried in small rows, and what appears to be entire families of children who died at a young age and close together to one another, which probably stems from the plague that went through the small town springs area in which many childrens lives were lost. A noticable element of just about anyone who enters into the confines of the cemetery itself, is the temperature. Even on the hottest summer day, it feels like air conditioning is on inside the cemetery. It also seems to hold a comfortable warmth in the cold season. The temperature is always different inside the confines of the cemetery then it is outside its perimeters. Following are some general photos of the cemetery at night. We have some very interesting ones taken during the day which we will try to post at a later time.

The entry to the cemetery

There are graves scattered among the tall trees, and it is a fairly large cemetery.

Some of the graves are piled stones such as you see here

This is a headstone that is situated in the far back corner of the cemetery, marking the graves of a husband and wife whom both died in the same year. The headstone fascinates many with its strange sentiment, one that the husband had inscribed before his own death. It reads, "Remember me as you pass by. As you are now so once was I. As I am now soon you shall be. Therefore prepare to follow me." It is as if Micheal Wolfe through his inscription in the stone is taunting you about your own mortality. On the opposite side of the stone, which is inscribed for his wife, it simply reads, "She is not dead, just sleeping."

Formal Investigation:

The team separated into three groups and went to different areas of the cemetery with cameras, digital recorders and appropriate meters. After an hour so the team came back together for a dead time evp session under the large tree towards the front of the cemetery.

The Findings:

There was little activity in the cemetery this night as with the other two locations we investigated, but it was predictably a calm night based on the charts concerning atmospheric elements. Two of our team sensitives both experienced what felt to be a playful child running about the cemetery. Even non sensitive team members experienced the whisks of cold spots that were also detected on the meters. The sensitives literally felt the child size entity whipping around their legs and waists just as like a child would be running in and out between persons, and would wrap their arm around your waist and spin a circle around you and then take off again in another direction to loop someone else, and this occurred several times with one of the sensitives. The cold whisps of the entity passing by quickly in this circular pattern would be what was picked up by the others and the meters. Eventually this dissapated and the team moved on from the location within the cemetery. There is a spirit entity within this cemetery that is referred to as the 'Guardian', and is an entity that the team has encountered in previous investigations. There were no evps gained from the dead time session, nor any other time in the investigation, but it was during the dead time session that one team member snapped an intentional photo of another team member standing a few feet away by near a grave. The team member did not appear in the photo, and in her place was a image of what is believed by some team members to be the 'Guardian'. The photographed team member also experienced sensations when this ocurred. The team members immediately tried to recreate this photo without success, subsequent photos showing only the team member standing in the photo and nothing else.. There were many orbs captured during the investigation, but aside from these three evidential events, the cemetery seemed very quiet this particular night.

The Evidence:

Mostly you are going to see orb photos until the last two photos. You know what they say, if you have seen one orb you have seen them all. That is unless you capture a unusal one. The orbs this night were pretty standard orbs outside of one blue orb that we got. No further narration is necessary until the last photos.

The below photos are what was captured instead of the team members photo that was intended. Some feel it resembles a partially revealed face that almost appears in motion. The team members joked that this entity jumped right up in front of the team member just as the camera went off. The first photo is the original and the second is a lighened version. As always we welcome any input from our guests.

The Conclusion:

Our team members know this location is very active, some of us having lived in the area and experienced previous paranormal activity outside of investigations, as well as during prior investigations. One of our team members have had children grow up in this area and dealt with the typical teenage adventures to the cemetery. This is how she encountered first hand the satanic activity that goes on at the cemetery. She began checking the cemetery to make sure her teenagers were not there when instructed to stay away, this due to the history of satanism in the location and the surrounding area all the way down to Salem. Up until that last night she went there on a Saturday 'full moon' night, the satanic activty at the cemetery was just rumor to her. After this event, she made it a point to warn the teens to stay away from the area, because although ghosts cannot hurt you, intruded upon and angry humans can. It is common for cemeterys to hold some paranormal activity, as it is the final home for the dead. Pinehill not only fits this criteria of a likely haunt for hundreds of years now, it has been an area where doors could have, and most likely have, been opened to possible demonic activity.
