Show Me Paranormal Investigation ~ Historical Phelps County Jail &
Historical Museum ~ Rolla
This investigation was performed at Historical Phelps County Jail
and Historical Museum in Rolla. MO.
June 7th ~ 2008
Case details:
These facilities are known to have paranormal activity present. To access
these structures the team had to make an appointment with a curator from
the Pulaski County Historical Society. She provided historial background
on the structures and opened them for our investigation. No haunting details
were provided, the team just wanted to investigate the structures and
see what we came up with pertaining to paranormal activty.
History of Historical Phelps County Jail, our first stop:
The jail is maintained by the Phelps County Historical Society. The jail
was built in 1860 for USD 3,000. The jail was operated by Phelps County
from 1860 to 1912. It housed both military and civilian prisoners during
the American Civil War. Dr. E.A. Stricker presented the jail to the Phelps
County Historical Society in 1943. It was added to the National Register
of Historic Places in 1990. The building's contractor, John A. Schnable,
used dolomite blocks measuring 22 inches by 22 inches quarried nearby.
The lower floor contains two windowless 6 foot by 13 foot stone cells
for solitary confinment. The upper floor contains a single room with cages
made from iron bars to hold multiple prisoners. The upper floor use to
include a wood burning stove for heating which aided in an escape at one
time, this due to the building having a thatch roof at the time. At leaast
one Inhabitant was put to death while doing his time in this jail, George
was hung by the neck until dead from the big tree in the citys cemetery
just a block or so from the jail.
Formal Investigation:
The team arrived at the jail at approximately nine pm. We first were
told the history of the jail and then given a tour of the jail with
the lights on. We then divided into three teams for the three rooms
housed within the jail. We went to lights out and each team began monitoring
for any activity with cameras, digital recorders and emf meters. The
teams then switched out areas and continued the investigation.
The Findings:
There was little activity noted by any of the teams in the lower section
of the jail. The upper room in the jail was were the activity presented.
Although activity was not in abundance, we did capture orbs in the upper
room, and experienced some cold spots. The most outstanding event was
a team member laid a dollar bill out flat in the center of the floor,
and during a dead time in which we attempted to interact with any spirits,
we asked that any entity present manipulate the dollar bill to show
that it was there. One of our team members used a dowsing pendulum to
ask questions of any spirits that may be present. All team members remained
visible by all others, via the moonlight that streamed in through the
windows, and all team members were situated around the perimeters of
the room at all times with no one near the dollar bill. When we called
lights on, we discovered that the dollar bill was folded in half and
surrounded by orbs in the photos. We recieved no evps from this site,
but did recieve orb photos.

The Evidence:

The dollar was placed in the floor flat, and discovered to be folded
in half after lights went back on. There were no orbs present in photos
before the dead time when the dollar was placed, but you can see how
many are present following deadtime.
Large orb lingering over roof of the jail
Conclusion of Jail Investigation:
The jail is reported to be haunted, so we will not dispute that. The
amount of activity on any given investigation can depend on many varibles
such as weather, solar x-rays, moon phase and so on. Some locations
are so heavily laden with paranormal activity that you can come away
with an abundance of evidence regardless of the varibles. This particular
night was a very calm night and not conducive to obtaining much if dependant
on those varibles. For now we will just call it a 'not so productive
night' at the jail and will visit again when the variables are good
for a haunting, and see if we get anything more.
History of the Historical Museum (Dillon Log Cabin), our second
stop:
The structure is a two story log cabin from 1830s-40s; and displays
artifacts of county's pioneers, Civil War, early industry & commerce.
The curator mostly spoke of the general history of the museum and the
artifacts housed within. We were given no information about paranormal
activity.
Formal Investigation:
The team arrived at the museum following the investigation at the jail
which is actually across the street from the museum to the right. We
first stood and listened to the curator tell about the history and artifacts.
During her historical speel, one of our team sensitives began to feel
a pull to the dining room of the cabin. Unable to resist the pull, yet
not wanting to be rude to the curator, she quickly walked to the room
and placed a digital recorder on the log table, then returning to listen
until the curator was finished. We then divided into three teams for
the investigation. Our sensitive that experienced the pulling went straight
to the dining area of the cabin and informed members that a female spirit
was pulling her there. She described the woman as having on old time
clothing, 1800 era. She then stated the name "Maude" and followed
with she did not know what that means, but the female said the name
"Maude" to her. It was then noted that there was a Maude,
the curator explained that the woman who opened up the cabin as a museum
was named Maude and that she had passed on many years before. That she
worked in the museum every day for many years until her death, and dressed
in 1800 era clothing for tours of the museum. The sensitive and her
team remained in the dining area, one team went upstairs to the bedrooms,
another to the back room, and a team to the front room of the cabin.
Lights out was called and each team began monitoring for any activity
with cameras, digital recorders and emf meters. Members experienced
the blocking of photos at times, cameras malfunctioning, movement of
objects upstairs. At the closing of the investigation and after exiting
outside of the structure, our sensitive that the Maude was interacting
with, once again pulled at her to look up towards the roof of the cabin.
The sensitive responded that she would look up if 'Maude' would pose
for a photo. Maude did pose for a photo and you will see this photo
in the evidence below.

right, the third a photo of a chair in the bedroom to the left that
has exhibited activity before.
The Evidence:

A large orb in the dining room where 'Maude' was entertaining, this
photo was captured during dead time and attempts to interact with the
Maude spirit. At first we thought it something was behind the curtain.
The third photo is another shot of the same area following the first
photo and the orb is gone.

a male spirit who was not so happy about us being there.

evidence of the male spirit whom we call 'Oscar'
These next photos are of something that was very subtle and the team
member who shot them inquired of the others if there was anything to
the lightened area she noticed at the window. These photos were taken
in the front room of the museum by the fireplace. It is common to shoot
two photos in rapid succession of areas in the event we catch something
materializing or it being there one second and gone the next, and even
with orbs this helps validate that it is not the camera itself causing
a questionable image. We thought it was just a dirty window, or something
reflecting from outside or inside the window and at first cast it off
as nothing. But further inspection by negatizing the shots aroused interest
again. We again held to it may be a reflection in the glass until we
noted that it was not showing up just in the glass paned areas, but
also in the wood frame areas which were not likely to reflect and definitely
not in the same manner as glass would. We noticed upon enlarging the
shot that the image had form, becoming even clearer when negatized.
We were working with the first photo and at first it appeared to be
a dress, but then we retrieved the second photo, negatized it and it
became even clearer in that the image had materlized further in the
second shot, it looking more like a suit or maybe a military uniform,
a man posed in a sitting position. You can see the neckline and both
pant legs, the left leg being clearer then the right and appearing to
be resting higher up as if the foot is resting on sa higher surface,
of which the something is also showing and appears to be steps possibly,
we are not sure. It also appears like the man is holding something like
a staff, cane, flag possibly, in the left hand. He is sitting in the
position of a frontal side profile. We still considered a reflection
of some kind, maybe from a photo across the room, until we noted that
at the upper left corners, of the lower window frame, where the glass
joins the wood frame there is a substance there that is more dense,
like ectoplasm consistency. being part of the apparition image itself.
When studying these spots it no longer appears to be on the direct surface
of the window and wood as a reflection would be, but a inch or so in
front of the window. We intend to investigate this further by returned
to the museum and looking to see if there is anything in this room that
resembles this figure that may have reflected in some way, this just
to be sure. We have provided photos below to help you see it more clearly,
and we welcome any input.

Photo one and Photo two shot in succession. Looks pretty normal, and
we were surprised that Heather even noticed a lightened area in the
window.
Good eye Heather!

The windows cropped out of both photos while in original size format
and saved so you can see the windows more closely. Note that the area
in the first photo is fainter then in the second photo, but it is still
at a glance looking like reflection or even just a dirty window. But
now we negatized just to have a different perspective.

We were working with the full size negatized shots so we could see it
clearly, unlike your view here, but you can see the darkening of the
image in the second negatized shot compared to the first shot. Notice
that in the first shot the shadow ends less then midway down the lower
window area and in the second shot you see the shadow form down even
lower in that window frame (on the right side).
In case you do not put the image together yourself, this was a illustrated
composite I did to point out features when sending to other members
for input. A friend that viewed this composite could not see what I
see, so let me say that this is how the form is appearing to me anyway,
you may see something different then I do. We again welcome any input
from our visitors.
But it did not end there. These shots were taken after closure of the
investigation and team members out front getting ready to leave. We
shoot around the area for orbs, etc. This again involved to photos shot
in succession. In the background there is a building which is the old
Historical Phelps County Courthouse, also claimed to be haunted. This
again was a case of something noticed in the second photos window by
the photo taker. However, there was something also in the first shot
and in the second shot something was added to the first thing. Again,
I will show you as I did above as it was a matter of having a good eye.
Appears to be nothing unusual here, until I noticed a faint black shadow
at the left hand lower window of the courthouse and decided to do a
closer inspection.

I clipped out the window in the original size photo and brought it up
close and could definitely see what appeared to be a womans figure with
the left arm down to her side and the right hand resting on her hip.
Looks like she may be wearing a dress that has poofy shoulders which
were common in the 1800's, and her hair may be in a bun. A friends child
said it looked like someone with a derby top hat on, so possibly it
is a thin male figure with a derby hat on. I tried doing some contrast
adjusting to bring the shadow out clearer and the second photo is the
best I could get. I first questioned if there was possibly a mannequin
placed in this window, but notice that the right arm extends past the
window frame and reflects onto the outer wall, so it is not inside the
window, but outside the window even though it gives the appearance of
being inside and looking out. I moved on to the second shot and was
stunned.

And no it is not a curtain effect, here is another window in the building.
There are in fact no curtains on any of the windows in the courthouse
(see investigation of the courthouse for day time view of courthouse).
I have also included a close up photo of the bright white square image
in the photo that some may have questioned as to what that is. It is
a sign that I believe reads Phelps County Muncipal Court from the best
I can make out.
Okay, suddenly we have a few orbs and you can pick up some kind of light
shading at the lower window in question, which the team member picked
up and submitted for input. But lets get a closer look....
This is wild, like something out of a ghost story book that has been
illustrated, that was my first thoughts when I seen this. I clipped
the window out of the original and enlarged it, other then that there
was no other manipulation such as contrast lightening, etc. Now we have
the female shadow which is still there, but she has been joined by what
looks almost like a skeletal entity, as well as there are orbs that
you cannot really pick up on until it was enlarged. This was just wicked!
Again, we welcome guest input in this.
The Findings:
Again, it was a calm night at the museum as well, or so it seemed until
we got the photos loaded. We are convinced that the spirit of Maude
Gaddy, the first curator, still loves the museum and chooses to malinger
there hoping to make her presence known to the visitors. Two of our
sensitives also felt a strong male presence in the back room of the
building, a presence whom was not as pleased about the visitation. Our
personal experiences and sensitivities play the biggest part in our
conclusion that the museum is definitely haunted, and these photos following
close behind. We feel this location also warrants another future investigation
under the right conditions because if we can get these kinds of photos
on a calm night, one has to wonder what could be obtained on a active
night.
